There are MPC and Maschine devices at various price points and form factors. You can do basic "drums and soul chops" like 9th Wonder or Havoc on an iphone nowadays.Native Instruments and Akai each have multiple devices in their product lines for beatmaking and music production. Hell.a new ipad and the right apps (Beatmaker, Korg Gadget, AU synths and FX) is more powerful and flexible than stuff from just 10 years ago and can easily replace a rack of gear or computer setup. I can always find what I'm looking for.ĭon't get me wrong, the stuff that's out now is so good, you can buy any of one of them (new MPC, Maschine, etc) and be good-to-go. I have Komplete and other NKS plugins, so most of my sounds are organized through Maschine. For getting work done on a daily basis, Maschine gets the most use. Hardware samplers and workstation keyboards also. I have a couple of older MPCs, a Maschine MK2 and Mikro, and an Ableton Push.

Actually Akai was a different company with different owners back then. In my opinion, the MPC Live has little to do with the classic MPCs of yesteryear. Akai basically had to play catch up and developed their own 'hybrid' (software/controller) solutions, eventually adding stuff like touchscreens and standalone operation. In a bunch of ways Maschine was better (library, browser, sounds, convenience) so a lot of guys switched over. Native Instruments caught Akai sleeping, took that same workflow and brought it into the computer by creating a 'hybrid' solution (dedicated controller and software) with Maschine. Long story short, the MPC had a certain workflow and functioned as either a self-contained box (when using samples) or centerpiece/hub for all your other gear (for sequencing keyboards and such).
